"Fernando's character reflects his work; he is tremendously active and able and can't sit on an idea for very long. This may be a reflection of the Hispanic side of his character, something that is very important to him. It didn't surprise me at all that during a recent residency in Mexico City he was to be found painting the town red with renowned Mexican wrestlers; something that sounds as if it has come straight from his prints and probably will"

Artist Residency at Frans Masereel Centrum

April 17th, 2012 in Artist residencies |

I have just returned from an artist in residency at the Frans Masereel Centrum center for graphic Art in Belgium.

These are some photos of the center itself

My project was based on illustrating a set of playing cards using both zinc plate and stone lithography which was a new experience for my printmaking practice.

Firstly I visited the playing card museum situated in Turnhout to gain a better understanding of the history of playing card printing

Whilst I was working at the FMC I produced work on a selection of different lithographic printing presses.

The offset proof press allowed me to draw directly onto my stone and produce this two colour reduction print here are some photos of the different stages of printing.

I also tried working on a smaller direct press where i had to draw my image in reverse on the stone.

To produce my own playing cards I printed six images at a time on zinc plates to save time which I printed using a larger direct press. The images had a transfer photocopy design which I made first to act as a boarder for the illustration.
