Laying down the law in Lager Lane and Lifting the Spirits in Tonic Row
The inspiration for these two pieces of work is Hogarth's 'Gin Lane' and 'Beer Street' and his comments on the Gin Act. His intention was to produce work which informed people about what was happening and the implications of the Act. This visual interpretation was one of the main ways of making comment to a large audience. I have located my pieces firmly in the consumerist and retail setting of the twenty first century city. The messages are broadly the same as Hogarth and show the implications of drink and all the associated crimes. I have used word play with the names on the contemporary street, which I feel draws attention to them without inviting prosecution for defamation! This is in the spirit of Hogarth. As with other work I have used devices of sub plots and lots of visual details going on around the picture. In every window, and down in the gutter, there are stories being played out, with lives lived and existences expiring.

Tomato Fiesta
This lithograph print is a taken from my experience when I visited the tomato throwing festival near Valencia in Spain. Lots of big lorries came through the village and dumped tonnes of tomatoes in the middle of the streets and people threw them at each other. It reminded me of being in a football riot with so many people being squashed together but everyone was having fun. At the end of the day the fire bridgade hosed everyone down before we went home.
This is a still shot of one of the characters within my animation psyching himself up before going back out into the pub to face whatever is thrown at him, whether it be a confrontation or an act of courting. I found it interesting to listen to people talking to each other or themselves when they know they are somewhere where others can't hear them. The whole idea for the animation came to me when I was in a pub toilet; they say ideas come to us at the strangest of times and they're right.

Down The Rabbit Hole
This print was made in collaboration with Marcelle Hanselaar. First of all she drew onto the film and then gave it back to me to draw over and add my own characters and style to it. I enjoyed this way of working together with other artists as it opens up new possibilities and makes you work in a different way. The end result is a powerful image with both our styles combined together.

The British Queen
I made this print together with chris pig. He started off drawing his part of the work onto special drawing film and then sent it to me to draw my character within the scene he had set. This was the first time we had worked together on a print and it taught us about our our working methods. This print represents a certain kind of British pub and the kinds of people you might come across if you were to stumble into some back street local. It was interesting using a range of mark making techniques on the film before it was passed to plate and had five different impressions printed in order to achieve the full tonal range.

Muggers Alley
This shows a business man being mugged and his laptop stolen as he takes a short-cut home from work. On the left is the poor part of the city and prison. On the right are the richer high rise flats with someone making a concerned phone call to the police. This print is also available in a black & white line version.
This image shows the city exploding with reference to the Industrial Revolution. The city has now become a place overtaken by machines and robots. The people of the city are suffering from overcrowding and starvation. This scene is a common one in many cities around the world. It is now time for the people to fight back. Viva la revolution!

Thug Way
Here we see a collection of football hooligans all fighting each other. The police are just turning up on the scene but most of the characters will slip away into the background and blend back into society. These acts of violence committed by these people are barbaric and sometimes lead to serious injury or even death.
