This re-working of William Hogarth´s Marriage a la Mode series will complete the trilogy of the Progress tales which I have re-worked into a modern day story.

The first two scenes are shown with the rich father of the youngest daughter who is sister to both Crack and Charlie from the Crack´s & Charlie´s progress narratives. She is seen walking her horses and her father is losing all his money.

Scene two introduces the son of the poor father from the other family gambling his money away in the local betting shop. The two fathers are seen drawing up a contract to marry their children together and form a partnership.

The story continues with a twist at the end, the remaining six scenes to follow soon.

The inspiration for this piece of work is William Hogarth's Harlot's Progress. I have written a contemporary tale using modern verse patterns, slang and word play. The daughter of a rich business man, she comes to London to stay with her aunt. However her aunt is a Madam, and Charlie soon becomes embroiled in the seedy existence of the House of Pleasure. Drugs and violence are the every day reality. There is a raid and the corruption is seen; some of the clients are judges and are let off, but the girls are always caught and pay for mens vices. Charlie succumbs to drugs and suffers. Her sister Tara comes to town and the two girls become a double act. Charlie goes into rehab, and her aunt tries to keep her entangled in her web of influence, (hence the constant references to black widow spider). However her father proves more influential and pays for Charlies treatment. This is harsh, but she overcomes the addiction and in the final scene she turns to her brother Crack for a way of escape. She has a cat, Hora, (playing on the sounds of the word a whore) who does become a victim of other cats, rats and the sewer life of the city. She has kittens and each of them meets a horrible fate. Hogarth was making a tale for his times, reflecting issues, and commenting on the corruption of society. I have made this tale contemporary, yet kept it in the spirit of Hogarth with layers of subtext, and a range of visual strands and sub plots and narrative devices.

The inspiration for this tale was William Hogarth's A Rake's Progress, and in writing my own text I wished to bring the moral story into a contemporary setting. I researched a number of adaptations of the Progress, and investigated modern and social issues. My version features the hero, Crack, and his faithful companion, Spike the dog. It follows their descent into crime, the corruptions of society and Crack's eventual breakdown into a nightmare of madness. Ultimately Crack's progress is told and he is; 'Locked in a box - blocked in a book - labeled - sentenced - full stop...' but the ambiguous ending leaves the potential for a sequel, Charlies Progress. Charlie is Crack´s younger sister.

Title: The Early Hours of the Morning

Size: 100cm x 70cm

Edition No: Unique hand coloured print

The idea for this print came to me as I was walking home one night in Maidstone. On the left hand side of a small street was a huge ugly looking prison in the centre of the town and on the right hand side of the street was a small local pub. I started to think about a narrative relating the two buildings together. It seems interesting to me the way there were people who were locked up for life on one side of the road and on the other side people were breaking the law by having a lock in after hours in the pub.

This sequence of four Linocuts shows the highs and lows of the gangster´s lifestyle in the 1950s. Firstly the gangsters are seen leaving the casino. The boss is the smaller one inbetween his two bodyguards. Next they are seen in the car driving to a cafe. Upon arrival the boss is seen shooting a rival from the mafia in the back. You can see his two bodyguards encouraging him to wack the other man out in the reflection of the mirror. In the last scene you see the gangsters in handcuffs outside the police station having been caught for their crimes.

This series of linocuts shows 13 different view points of how an incident really happened within a public house one night. It all comes together within a police document between the witness and police man, and shows how people bend the truth to protect friends and relatives. As the detective you read the case file and decide who is in the wrong and what really happened. The complete book can be seen within the book´s section of my site.
